Thyroid Optimization

Our thyroid optimization program goes beyond standard lab testing to provide a comprehensive evaluation of thyroid function, including TSH, Free T3, Free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies. We focus on identifying both overt and subtle imbalances that can affect energy, metabolism, weight, mood, and overall hormonal balance.

Treatment Options

Treatment is highly individualized and may include prescription thyroid medications such as:

  • Levothyroxine (synthetic T4)

  • Cytomel (synthetic T3)

  • Armour Thyroid or NP Thyroid (natural desiccated thyroid with T4 and T3)

  • Customized combinations to optimize conversion and function

Lifestyle & Functional Support

In addition to medication, we address lifestyle and dietary factors that influence thyroid health, including:

  • Nutrient deficiencies (selenium, iodine, zinc)

  • Blood sugar regulation

  • Stress management

  • Gut health

By combining medical optimization with functional lifestyle interventions, we help patients improve energy, metabolism, weight management, and overall hormonal balance.

Thyroid Optimization

Thyroid disease in men is significantly underdiagnosed. This happens for two reasons: thyroid symptoms closely overlap with signs of testosterone deficiency, which tends to get more clinical attention in men, and men are simply screened for thyroid problems less often.

At Renew Health & Wellness, Dr. Jennifer Redmond, CNP, DNP includes a comprehensive thyroid evaluation as a standard part of every man's hormonal assessment. She recognizes that persistent fatigue, weight gain, and chronic coldness in men deserve a thorough thyroid investigation - not just a testosterone check.

Her thyroid panel goes well beyond a basic TSH test. It includes:

  • Free T3

  • Free T4

  • Reverse T3

  • Thyroid antibodies

This gives a complete picture of how your body is producing, converting, and using thyroid hormones. Poor conversion of T4 to T3 is a particularly common finding that a standard TSH test misses entirely. This means many men experience real hypothyroidism (low thyroid) symptoms even after being told their thyroid is "normal."

Treatment is individualized based on your complete lab results. Medication options include:

  • Levothyroxine (T4 replacement)

  • Cytomel (T3 replacement)

  • Natural desiccated thyroid - such as Armour or NP Thyroid

The goal of dosing is not simply to bring your TSH into a normal range. Instead, it is optimized to achieve the Free T3 level at which you feel and function your best.

Nutritional support is also incorporated alongside any medication management. Key nutrients that support healthy thyroid function include:

  • Selenium - aids T4 to T3 conversion

  • Zinc

  • Iodine

  • Vitamin D

The relationship between thyroid function and testosterone is carefully assessed as well. Hypothyroidism can actually suppress testosterone production, compounding the hormonal picture in men who show signs of both deficiencies at the same time.

At Renew Health & Wellness, persistent fatigue and weight gain in men are never automatically assumed to be a testosterone issue. Every patient receives a thorough, multi-hormonal evaluation that includes a full thyroid workup - because the real answer deserves more than a single-hormone explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to help you make the right decision.

Can we keep our current care team while working with you?

Absolutely. Many patients work with us alongside their existing providers. Our integrative, root-cause approach complements traditional reproductive medicine, and we're happy to coordinate with your other providers.

What's your success rate?

Our patients achieve greater than 70% pregnancy success rates, and our outcomes continue to improve as we refine our protocols. Success rates vary based on individual factors including age, underlying conditions, and how long you've been trying — all of which we discuss honestly during your consultation.

I live outside of South Dakota — can I still be seen?

Yes. Dr. Redmond is licensed for telemedicine in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Montana, Minnesota, and Wyoming, with licensure expanding to Florida and Arizona soon. You can also travel to our Sioux Falls clinic for in-person care. Fertility care often involves labs, which we coordinate with local labs near you.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept insurance, which allows us to spend 60–120 minutes per appointment getting to the root cause rather than working within the limits of an insurance-driven system. We accept HSA and FSA payments, and we provide claim forms for potential reimbursement. Initial consultation is $250, with lab testing typically ranging from $150–$800 depending on what's needed.

Can testosterone therapy affect my fertility?

This is an important question. Standard testosterone replacement can actually suppress sperm production, so fertility optimization in men requires a careful, specialized approach. Dr. Redmond's men's health training allows her to optimize hormones in ways that support — rather than compromise — your fertility goals. This is exactly why a thorough evaluation matters before starting any therapy.
