Low libido or loss of interest in sex

Reproductive & Sexual Health

Low libido and loss of interest in sex is a condition that affects many women and is often dismissed as a natural part of aging, stress, or relationship changes. In reality, it is a multifactorial condition with identifiable hormonal, medical, and psychological causes. At Renew Health and Wellness, Dr. Jennifer Redmond, CNP, DNP takes a comprehensive, judgment-free approach to female sexual health. Every patient deserves a thorough evaluation - not just reassurance that what they are experiencing is "normal."

The evaluation starts with a full hormonal panel that looks at several key hormones:

  • Testosterone - the primary driver of libido in women

  • Estrogen and progesterone - which support mood, energy, and physical comfort

  • DHEA - a hormone that supports overall vitality and sexual function

  • Thyroid hormones - which regulate metabolism and energy levels

  • Prolactin - elevated levels can suppress sexual desire

Testosterone is often thought of as a male hormone, but it is the primary driver of libido in women. Testosterone levels decline significantly with age, oral contraceptive use, and menopause. This is a well-established clinical fact that many patients are never told. When low testosterone is identified, bio-identical testosterone therapy is started at carefully calibrated doses. The goal is to restore sexual desire without causing masculinizing side effects like unwanted hair growth or voice changes.

Estrogen and progesterone levels are also optimized to support the emotional, relational, and physical factors that influence libido. For women where low libido has a significant psychological component - such as stress, anxiety, body image concerns, or relationship disconnect - our on-site licensed mental health therapist provides integrated support alongside medical treatment. This combined approach addresses the whole picture, not just the hormones.

When appropriate, FDA-approved medications are also discussed as options for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) - a medical condition where low libido causes personal distress. These include:

  • Addyi (flibanserin) - a daily pill that works on brain chemistry to increase sexual desire

  • Vyleesi (bremelanotide) - an injectable medication used as needed before sexual activity

  • PT-141 (bremelanotide peptide) - a peptide therapy that enhances sexual responsiveness through central nervous system pathways

At Renew Health and Wellness, low libido is treated as a clinical condition with identifiable causes and effective solutions. You deserve a provider who takes your sexual health as seriously as you do. The right treatment plan can restore desire, confidence, and intimacy - and it starts with an honest, thorough evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to help you make the right decision.

Can we keep our current care team while working with you?

Absolutely. Many patients work with us alongside their existing providers. Our integrative, root-cause approach complements traditional reproductive medicine, and we're happy to coordinate with your other providers.

What's your success rate?

Our patients achieve greater than 70% pregnancy success rates, and our outcomes continue to improve as we refine our protocols. Success rates vary based on individual factors including age, underlying conditions, and how long you've been trying — all of which we discuss honestly during your consultation.

I live outside of South Dakota — can I still be seen?

Yes. Dr. Redmond is licensed for telemedicine in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Montana, Minnesota, and Wyoming, with licensure expanding to Florida and Arizona soon. You can also travel to our Sioux Falls clinic for in-person care. Fertility care often involves labs, which we coordinate with local labs near you.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept insurance, which allows us to spend 60–120 minutes per appointment getting to the root cause rather than working within the limits of an insurance-driven system. We accept HSA and FSA payments, and we provide claim forms for potential reimbursement. Initial consultation is $250, with lab testing typically ranging from $150–$800 depending on what's needed.

Can testosterone therapy affect my fertility?

This is an important question. Standard testosterone replacement can actually suppress sperm production, so fertility optimization in men requires a careful, specialized approach. Dr. Redmond's men's health training allows her to optimize hormones in ways that support — rather than compromise — your fertility goals. This is exactly why a thorough evaluation matters before starting any therapy.
